Virginia is a state that is brimming with haunted locales. What are the most haunted places in Virginia? The following is a list of abandoned ghost towns in Virginia: Matildaville near Great Falls National Park, Wash Woods at False Cape State Park, Pocosin Mission in Shenandoah National Forest, Lignite in Botetourt County, and Elko Tract in Henrico County. In many cases, it was the changing economy or shifting trends in transportation that left once-bustling communities left in disrepair. While Virginia may not have tumbleweeds rolling through boarded-up main streets, you may be surprised to learn that there are a few settlements that have been left for abandon over the year. Knowing its complicated and disturbing history, it comes as no surprise that there would be lingering spirits inside this chilling facility. However, those who have embarked on paranormal investigations have reported some chilling evidence of hauntings inside this abandoned sanitarium. It's important to note that the landmark is on private property, so it's forbidden to visit without express permission from the property owner. While many of the old asylums in Virginia listed above hold haunting pasts, it's believed that the Dejarnette Sanitarium is legitimately haunted. What's the most haunted asylum in Virginia? What do you know about these old asylums in Virginia? Tell us in the comments below? It’s hard to imagine a time when things were so primitive. I think there is one thing that we can all agree on when looking back on these old asylums in Virginia, and that is that we’ve come a long way in both understanding and care at mental health facilities. However, they have remained true to their original operating principle of "swift recovery for the mentally ill" and continue to provide high-quality care for psychiatric patients. Still in operation today, Southwestern State Hospital has seen many changes over 125 years, both in diagnoses and subsequent treatments. In 1951, the first lobotomies were performed, but the practice was short-lived. My advice? Have a couple of beers, turn out the lights and get the vid on the big telly and prepare to be truly creeped out. Many of the patients in the early part of the 20th century suffered from conditions like syphilis-related dementia, tuberculosis, and pellagra, a vitamin deficiency that caused dementia, although the hospital also cared for mentally and emotionally disturbed patients, as well as those with physical ailments like epilepsy. You can watch the video here or go to Adam’s YouTube channel to check it out (as well as his other brilliant videos of him exploring some mad places). Not the MRI scanners or anything like that, but most of the furniture and many of the fixtures and fittings still remain, a fact that Adam and his fellow Urban Explorers uncover in their most recent video. When they were leaving though – they seemingly decided to leave everything behind. The hospital closed its doors for good in 2015, with all services being transferred to Trafford General Hospital just down the road. It was then converted into a maternity hospital in 1925, and one of the Bee Gee’s was even born here in 1958! It doesn’t really matter what architectural style it has really, all you need to know is that it started out as a private residence and was then lent to the British Red Cross as an auxiliary hospital during the First World War. Well, that’s as simple as I can make it – if you really want to know what ‘Italianate’ style means in terms of architecture – feel free to spend around 2 years of your life doing your own research. It was designed in an Italianate style meaning it sort of resembles an Italian Renaissance building, but a bit more modern. Now, the hospital itself was built all the way back in 1850 as a private residence known as Basford House. One such person is Adam Mark, who recently grabbed a couple of his mates and went to walk around the VERY creepy abandoned Stretford Memorial Hospital. This brings me on to a couple of fellas who go out and actively explore these kinds of places for your viewing pleasure. I mean, there could be a zombie or a monster or a weird evil clown lurking behind any corner, and if my experience of watching shite horror films on Netflix is correct, then there almost certainly will be. As it gets closer to Halloween and people start talking about horror films and scary stories, now is the time to bring out the big guns – and nothing is scarier that exploring an old abandoned building.
